Yeah he was just hanging out outside of the ESPN Radio section of ESPN. Yeah he waved at me when I waved back. Yeah he was in cognito with his green trucker hat. Yeah it didn't trick me.
Sigh. I don't want the internship to end!!!

Meeting Berman
Chris Berman, the big dawg, the king of ESPN was finally in the office on Monday. He hadn't been there for 6 weeks. I walked by his door every day just to make sure...
I had full intentions of actually meeting Stuart Scott that day, but his door was closed and I chickened out and wouldn't knock.
Berman's door on the other hand...was not.
Outside of his office door is a "Take a Number" kiosk as a joke...because he is a very busy man. I thought, here's my chance! I took a deep breath and peeked inside his opened door. Nothing. He wasn't there. But everything he could ever possibly own was in there. Tons of Bills memorabilia, tons of pictures with players, etc. Tons of everything. But no Chris.
I went back to my desk to tell Brian, my supervisor. He told me to go back again at 5:30pm b/c he was probably in a meeting. So I did.
I walked by the door and it was slightly closed but I could hear him talking on the phone. I was standing outside of his door, waiting for him to finish so I could walk in, when I saw Brittany. I ran to Brittany!
She asked me if I wanted to meet Keyshawn Johnson, an anchor and former football player, and I said sure! So I walked to the Make-Up Room with her where she gave him his suit. Apparently she was helping him ALL day! She had to go and get a steamer for him, it didn't work, and we watched as he ironed his blazer while it hung from a hanger. Silly. In came Mark Schlereth. I've seen him a few times before. His beauty is amazing...definitely understand why he's Roc Hoover!
They both got up to leave and "kill time" before they went on air. I asked Keyshawn to introduce me to Berman. He didn't know him...So I walked by Berman's office again but this time Mark and another guy were standing there talking to him. I thought, here's my chance!
I walked over to the door and stood outside, waiting for Mark to notice me and do the awkward "uhhh there's a girl standing out here" move to the side. So he moved over and I pushed through and said "Hi, I'm Ashley and I've really wanted to meet you!"
Berman's desk was so packed that I literally could not see him over a pile of tapes. I wasn't sure if I was talking to him or not!
He got up shook my hand. Just then the two guys left and I was there talking to Berman for 20 minutes before he got ready to go on air at 6:30pm!!
We talked Bills, UNC, the stuff I do at UNC, how he got where he was, and advice for me if I wanted to pursue on-air. He suggested I find an area I could "settle" in and apply to jobs within a 100 mile radius. I then just go-go-go.
He said b/c I had the guts to walk into his office and start talking, means "I got something." That meant a lot to me. I told him how I did the interviewing on the Red Carpet and he congratulated me for taking on such a task.
His biggest piece of advice that he was told while starting out as an anchor was, "Be pushy, but not a pain in the ass." And only I know when I'm being a pain the ass.
Meeting him made this whole internship worth it! He was so nice and wanted to genuinely talk to me and learn about what I do. He wanted to give me advice and told me I could definitely do on-air if I work hard. I'll take what he said to heart. I want to work hard just so he can see me in the future doing exactly what I want to do. I want to tell Entertainment Tonight what he told me and how it inspired me.
I left that day excited to return to school, to begin what I've always wanted to do.

So it finally happened. And we all wanted it to happen the day we WEREN'T working. Mainly because the entire day is purely Bonds...
I had to work on Best of Mike & Mike today. I came in at 7:45am, like always. Except I was unaware of his new title as the Homerun King. It happened at 11:45pm the night before so of course I was asleep. When I woke up this morning I turned nothing on so as to not wake the roomies, and rocked out to the iPod all the way to work. Still not knowing of Bonds...
When I went into the Digital Center I sat down, signed on to the computer and turned on the tv. I changed the channel to Mike & Mike and that's when I heard it. Luckily I knew the guys around me, so when I screamed out "What?" they didn't laugh too hard. I wasn't the only one who discovered this until they got to work. Hey, atleast my job is sports.
I felt like I truly joined everyone in this experience. I've never been a real baseball fan. I'm more a fan of the roasted almonds and hot dogs. But this summer I've learned a lot more about the sport.
I was saddened when Barry Bonds beat Hank Aaron's record because Hank Aaron was a name I knew. A name that I grew up with - the Homerun King. It will feel weird to know someone else surpassed him. Especially with the possible steroids use. If he were found guilty in 2001 (still only accused), it wouldn't matter. So is his record still tainted? The use of steroids is now illegal, but not before. Should those previous homeruns count?
It's unfortunate that this great thing in baseball happened and some won't accept it. It will be hard for the fans to allow Bonds to be the King. There are too many variables against him.
And that was all ESPN today. Nothing else but Bonds.

NYC Intern Day
On Tuesday all the interns boarded a bus bound for the Big Apple. We split into two groups and took two separate buses. Our bus, of course, was the party bus. I broke out the videocamera for the first half of the ride. You can tell who loves the camera! Both George and Bobby were the hosts of the "Trip to NYC!" I videotaped for about 10 minutes the craziness then Cars was on so I had to stop and watch.
It was about 8:45am when the bus finally left ESPN. We arrived in the city at about 11:30am, jumped off and ran into ESPNZone because we were starving. But, oh no, the food was not first. Russel Wolfe, the Executive VP of ESPN International was our speaker. He was really cool. Oddly enough, when he was offered the job, he was asked to move to Hong Kong...sounds familiar? All my friends were turning and smiling because they knew my family lived in China, just like he did!
After Russel spoke, it was time for food. Unfortunately we only had an hour to eat, play video games, and check out NYC before the bus left at 2:30pm. A little unfair? I think so.
So we scarfed down food, even though it was so delicious and I wanted seconds, and ran upstairs to play. When we got up there, there was a ton of little kids on ALL of the games. We had to wait in line for every game. We played probably 4 games because we felt so rushed to move on to the ESPN store shopping and then possible NYC sightseeing. At 2:15pm we ran downstairs where I instantly found the ESPN shorts of my dreams. I found a jacket too, so if you see me sporting the ESPN gear, just say good job. 35% discount ya can't go wrong!
At 2:30pm we stood outside ready for the bus while the other interns who planned on staying in NYC were preparing to leave. At 3pm we were still standing and waiting. I could have been doing something cool rather than standing next to an old trash can for 1/2 an hour! If I didn't have to work really early on Wednesday...or if I wasn't sick...I would have stayed in NYC. But no, I was stuck standing on a street corner with 20 other interns waiting for the bus that would never come.
We eventually left at 3:15pm and arrived back in Bristol at 6:15pm.
We spent more time traveling than we did in NYC. That was my Tuesday. Don't get me wrong, I'm very appreciative of the event they planned for us, but I felt so rushed that I could not enjoy it.
Plus I was hungry the second I got off that bus so I clearly did not get enough food for lunch.
